Each of Liz Santoro and Pierre Godard’s works begins with a question left unanswered by the previous one. As we turn to Maps, let’s recall the memory of For Claude Shannon : the thrilling experience of a perceptual disturbance through which the dance only appeared freer because of the extreme acuity the eye glimpsed in its narrative modes. This time with six dancers, Maps continues the exploration of intimate links between modes of linguistic development and the unfurling of a choreographic form on stage. Neurosciences lead us to think of the way a semantic system is mapped as a cartography onto the cortex. It’s in these terms that we can tackle the physical organization of language in the biological space of the brain; and to remember this when making performative arts. These captivating principles assume, loud and clear, that complexity allows for the multiplication of choices, defying the dismal landscape of established habits. In this way, the body, source of all questions, is freed.
