Magali Milian and Romuald Luydlin like roads less travelled. Since creating their company, La Zampa, in 2000, they have experimented with every conceivable format. In Opium, three dancers, three musicians of rock persuasion, a singer, and an actress build on the work of an anthropologist-journalist and two photographers. The piece takes after an apocalyptic cabaret, against the backdrop of threatening times. “We move through the world as through desert conditions. The danger is that one becomes so used to the desert that one ends up feeling at home there.” The philosopher Hannah Arendt words, rubbing against the effusive warmth of the world of Nina Simone, set the tone for a captivating and poisonous atmosphere, between joyous indifference and legitimate violence.
