Controversial and provocative choreographer, Robyn Orlin has continuously pushed the boundaries of performance art and dance in the 20 years that she has been creating. Her work has been recognized in South Africa and abroad through various awards. Robyn Orlin works in a rather eclectic way, from project to project and invariably tries to find ways of including the community and her audiences into her work. Her point of departure when making a new work is the immediate environment, which acts as a springboard to open up issues around culture, history and identity.

The masterclass aims to provide an opportunity for artists to work within an environment that will allow them to investigate methods for developing personal vocabularies. Starting with a simple physical warm-up, participants will then spend time problem solving through improvisation and free association around themes established by themselves during the workshop. The individual material created will result in a showing, how this is presented will be decided by the individual participant.

Conference with Olivier Hespel

During the workshop, participants will take part in a professional meeting with Olivier Hespel, dance critic, focusing on Robyn Orlin’s work.
